The South Carolina baseball program is entering a new era, as it hired Kevin Schnall as its new coach last month. Schnall spent the last two seasons at Coastal Carolina, where he compiled a 93-36 record as head coach. He comes to Columbia hoping to bring back a program to the College World Series, where it hasn't gone since the 2012 season.

In just his first couple months on the job, South Carolina's new skipper has committed himself to building an elite roster for the Gamecocks. A big place where he has found success is in the transfer portal, where he has landed several big-time prospects.

In fact, his haul has been so impressive that On3's Pete Nakos named South Carolina as the No. 2 overall transfer portal winner in the country:

Schnall's portal haul has been huge. From Coastal Carolina, he brought along with him pitchers Hayden Johnson, Colby Richardson, Colby Richardson, Jackson Winer, Daniel Parker and Luke Jones. Utility players like catcher Brice Estep and third baseman Walker Mitchell also followed him from Coastal.

But Schnall has landed big-time players elsewhere across the country, too. From Auburn, South Carolina landed big-time offensive weapon Bristol Carter, as well as Connor Shouse from Texas Tech. He also was able to land a few key Wake Forest players, in JD Stein and Luke and Andrew Costello. Coach Schnall hired longtime Wake Forest hitting coach

As for pitchers, Schnall added Miguel Hugas from Mercer, Ethan Sutton from USF, and Columbia native Carter Harrington, Maryland transfer Andrew Koshy and Jordan Stephens from Georgia.

Schnall getting a big transfer portal haul his first couple months on the job isn't exactly a huge surprise. When he was hired, he spoke about building an elite roster in Columbia as one of his biggest priorities as the Gamecocks' new head coach.

“One-A is player acquisition," Schnall said in June of his biggest priorities as he takes over at South Carolina. "We have to retain the right players, and we have to acquire the right players. Players that obviously have the right skillset, but they have to have the right energy. They have to have the right makeup, and we have to have the right people.”

Clearly he has lived up to that so far. Although the transfer portal window officially closed on July 1, graduate transfers have a bit more flexibility. So South Carolina could add one or two more players in between now and then.

After a program-low 36 losses in 2026, Gamecock fans have to be excited about the direction the program is headed so early in Schnall's tenure.
