South Carolina baseball has been quite busy in recent days. As new Gamecocks head coach Kevin Schnall is starting to build this South Carolina program in his own image, he has also landed several talented prospects via the transfer portal.Â
On Sunday evening, the Gamecocks landed Miguel Hugas from the portal out of Mercer. Hugas, who is coming off of his junior season with the Bears, posted the news of his commitment to the Gamecocks on his Instagram page.Â
While Hugas is primarily considered a right-handed pitcher, he also played outfield for Mercer last season as well. This past season for the Bears, Hugas finished with a 9-2 win-loss record, and posted a 6.17 ERA. He was also credited with 15 saves and another 52 strikeouts across his 77.1 innings pitched.Â
Hugas has had a journeyman college baseball career thus far to say the least. The new Gamecock is actually a native of Caracas, Venezuela, who started his collegiate baseball career at Chipola College in Marianna, Fla. from 2024-2025. During his sophomore season. Hugas was named to the D1 All-FCSAA Second Team as a pitcher, as well as the All-Panhandle Conference First Team on the mound. He was also named to the All-Defensive Team as an outfielder. His sophomore season was his best at Chipola, posting a 7-3 record with a 3.52 ERA across 61.1 innings.Â
He played high school baseball in Pittsburgh, out of Shaler Area HS. Hugas' commitment was the second addition to Schnall's Gamecock roster, as he joined College of Charleston right-hander Carter Harrington, who also committed on Sunday. Â
Congrats to Hugas on landing at South Carolina, and welcome to the Gamecocks and Columbia!Â
