The South Carolina Gamecocks baseball program has officially entered a new era. This week, the Gamecocks officially named Kevin Schnall as its next head coach, who arrives from Coastal Carolina. The move was expected to be made by South Carolina athletic director Jeremiah Donati for months, but it was finally made official on Wednesday.

Now, Schnall is putting together his blueprint of rebuilding the Gamecock program. Speaking exclusively with Gamecocks Online's Brad Muller, Schnall revealed his top priorities as the new head man at South Carolina.

“Number one is the staff,” Schnall told the school. “We have to assemble an elite coaching staff; a staff that would rival any coaching staff in the entire country."

At Coastal, Schnall's coaching staff included the likes of pitching coach Matt Wilson, who helped the Chanticleers reach the CWS Finals last season.

Wilson won both the ABCA Division I Baseball and the D1Baseball.com Assistant Coach of the Year awards while helping guide a top-ranked pitching staff in the country and Sun Belt. The good news for Gamecock fans is that he reportedly is expected to follow Schnall to Columbia. But that's not all that Schnall is looking to bring to South Carolina in the early days of his tenure.

“One-A is player acquisition," Schnall said. "We have to retain the right players, and we have to acquire the right players. Players that obviously have the right skillset, but they have to have the right energy. They have to have the right makeup, and we have to have the right people.”

Schnall has already brought several big-name Coastal players with him to South Carolina via the transfer portal, including pitchers Hayden Johnson, Daniel Parker and Colby Richardson, as well as catcher Brice Estep and third baseman Walker Mitchell. He reportedly will host some top pitchers that have entered the portal this weekend, too.

Schnall arrives in Columbia with a ton of College World Series experience. He spent the last 12 seasons at Coastal Carolina, first as an assistant from 2016-2024, and the last two as head coach. The Chanticleers lost to LSU in the CWS last season.

Although the Chanticleers won 37 games during the 2026 season, Coastal fell to Florida State in the Regionals just a few weeks ago. Overall, Schnall is 93-36 as a head coach. As an assistant, he helped lead the Chanticleers to a CWS title in 2016.

It may be early in his tenure, but Schnall is saying all the right things Gamecock fans are eager to hear after a historic 35-loss season in Columbia. South Carolina needs a head coach that can bring the Gamecocks back to the CWS where it belongs, and Schnall brings plenty of experience there. The fact that there are five SEC teams in Omaha this year, including Ole Miss, Texas, Georgia, Alabama and Oklahoma magnifies that even more.

Schnall takes over for head coach Paul Mainieri, who despite coming out of retirement after a legendary career at LSU, finished with a 40-40 record in Columbia.
