The South Carolina Gamecocks are starting a new era with their baseball program. With the hire of new head coach Kevin Schnall from Coastal Carolina, the Gamecocks' new skipper is busy building his program and his own image as he transitions to the new gig.
A big part of that is working on the recruiting trail, as he is tasked with bringing in talent that can contribute both right away in Columbia and down the line.
Over the weekend, Schnall landed a pair of key verbal commits to the Gamecocks 2027 recruiting class. One of those was right-handed pitcher Braden Richardson, who plays for Fort Mill High School in South Carolina. Choosing to verbally commit to the Gamecocks on his birthday, he announced he's joining South Carolina's 2027 class via a post on his X profile
Today, on my 18th birthday, I am humbled to announce my commitment to the University of South Carolina.

I want to thank God for His blessings and guidance, and thank my family for the sacrifices, support, and love that made this dream possible. Thank you to my coaches,… pic.twitter.com/UamjdrvoMi
Here's Perfect Game's scouting report of Richardson:
"Medium broad shouldered athletic build with plenty of physical projection remaining. 6.81 runner in the sixty. Primary second baseman on defense, hands work to both sides with good angles. Quick first step with range and accurate throws. Worked in the outfield with one-hand gather to exchange. Higher release on throws with carry to the bases. Right-handed pitcher with abbreviated windup for the the third base side of rubber. High 3/4 slot with slightly closed landing at foot strike."
But that's not the only commitment that Schnall landed over the weekend. The Gamecocks' 2027 class also landed a commitment from utility player Joseph Rutledge II, also from Fort Mill, S.C. Rutledge plays shortstop, second and third base as well as outfield. He posted a photo of him in a Gamecock uniform with his family on his X page on Saturday:

Schnall has spoken to the media about bringing elite talent to Columbia as one of his main priorities as South Carolina's new head coach.
“One-A is player acquisition," Schnall said earlier this month. "We have to retain the right players, and we have to acquire the right players. Players that obviously have the right skillset, but they have to have the right energy. They have to have the right makeup, and we have to have the right people.”
Congrats to both guys on joining the South Carolina 2027 class!
