New South Carolina head coach Kevin Schnall is wasting no time building an elite roster in Columbia. Although he was hired earlier this month, he has already started to land an elite class of transfers.

On Saturday, the Gamecocks landed a verbal commitment from Wake Forest slugger Luke Costello. Costello has spent the last two seasons with the Demon Deacons, where he had two great seasons. As a true freshman in 2025, he saw action in 33 games, batting .290 with 10 home runs.

As a sophomore, he batted .302 and was second on Wake Forest with 17 homers on the season, getting an impressive .637 slugging percentage. Costello committed to the Gamecocks via a post on his Instagram.

"The past two years at Wake Forest have meant more than I can put into words," Costello wrote. Thank you to my coaches, teammates, support staff, and everyone who made my time there so special. I’ll always be grateful for the experiences and memories. With that being said, I’m excited for the next chapter and blessed to announce my commitment to the University of South Carolina. Looking forward to competing with an incredible program, staff, and embracing the road ahead. Thank you, Wake. Let’s get to work, Columbia"

While there is a chance he will get drafted in the 2026 MLB Draft next month, rated as a top-400 prospect via Perfect Game, it sounds like for now he is committed to the Gamecocks. Him transferring to South Carolina isn't a huge surprise. Coach Schnall hired longtime Wake Forest hitting coach Bill Cilento, and he has already brought along some prospects with him, like star shortstop JD Stein.

But Costello is also connected to the Gamecocks via another way—his younger brother, Andrew Costello, also played as a true freshman at Wake Forest this past season. But Andrew announced he was transferring to South Carolina last week.

With both Costello's transferring to Wake Forest, it's now a family affair for the Gamecocks.

Congrats to Andrew and Luke, and welcome home!
