The South Carolina Gamecocks appear to be on the cusp of landing one of the biggest recruits of the 2027 cycle. On Wednesday, all eyes were on five-star cornerback Joshua Dobson, who was set to announce his commitment to his final schools in South Carolina, Michigan, Texas A&M and Auburn.
Even before his announcement, the expert confidence was building for head coach Shane Beamer to land one of the biggest prospects of his tenure. On Wednesday ahead of his announcement, Rivals recruiting experts in Steve Wiltfong and Chad Simmons logged a prediction for South Carolina to land the highly-talented cornerback in Dobson. On the same day, On3 had flipped its prediction for the Gamecocks with a 76% chance to land Dobson.Â
The news comes as South Carolina has trended in a positive direction in landing the highly-touted corner. On Monday, Wiltfong reported that the Gamecocks were in a great spot just days before his commitment.Â
The report stated that the Gamecocks had given Dobson the "healthiest" offer of all his final schools, and that it could be too much to say no to. He added that South Carolina defensive backs coach Torrian Gray has been leading his recruitment, and although Dobson wanted more clarity on head coach Shane Beamer's future in Columbia, the school has cleared things up for him.Â
Previously, Texas A&M had been the leader to land Dobson throughout his recruiting process. For most of the month of June, Rivals had the Aggies with an 86% chance of landing Dobson, with the same outlet putting South Carolina at 3%. Saturday Blitz's Nicholas Rome also predicted Dobbs will land at Texas A&M. Â
Dobson is rated as the nation's No. 3 overall cornerback for 2027 per the 247Sports Composite. He is also the No. 1 overall prospect from his home state of North Carolina, which South Carolina is the closest to of his final schools. Â South Carolina also had the benefit of having the last of Dobson's final visits to his final schools, as he was on-campus in Columbia the weekend of June 19.Â
The news of Dobson's commitment to the Gamecocks comes as Coach Beamer has been getting positive momentum on the recruiting trail in recent weeks. Just last week, South Carolina added four prospects to the 2027 class, including blue-chips in wide receiver Iveon Lewis, who flipped from Kentucky, and cornerback Kelvin Millington.Â
Dobson's commitment is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET on Rivals' Youtube page. If Beamer pulls off landing Dobson as expected, it will be the biggest prospect he's landed for 2027 by far, and he could be one of the most highly-touted recruits he's landed since arriving in Columbia.Â
Barring a last-minute surprise or delay in his announcement, it appears as though Beamer is just a few hours away from pulling this off. Gamecocks could be entering a July 4th weekend with some of the best news on the recruiting trail in some time.
