The South Carolina Gamecocks are having a major recruiting weekend in Columbia. South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer is hosting the likes of five-star cornerback Joshua Dobson for an official visit, as well as four-star offensive tackle Nate Carson.Â
In the middle of all that, the Gamecocks were also able to land a verbal commit from a preferred walk-on in Brooks Dow. First reported by Gamecock Central, Dow played high school football for Pickens High School, and accepted the PWO offer from South Carolina offered on Friday evening.Â
Dow, who primarily played quarterback in high school, is being recruited by Coach Beamer and the Gamecocks as a tight end instead of signal-caller. 247Sports lists Dow as a 6-foot-6, 210-pound prospect, so South Carolian recruiting him as a tight end makes perfect sense. Per his 247Sports page, he has just one Division I offer from Appalachian State, who offered him in February. He also plays basketball for his high school basketball team.Â
"Staying Home!!! Dow wrote in a post on his Instagram with a photo of him and Coach Beamer.Â
"I am excited to announce my commitment to the University of South Carolina! Thank you to everyone that has supported me and believed in me along the way! Thank you Coach Beamer, Elliott, and the rest of the South Carolina coaching staff for giving me an opportunity!!"
Dow's athletic ability makes him a valuable addition to the Gamecock roster. If Dow does end up needing to be used as a quarterback at South Carolina, he has some solid reps under center. Per two seasons tracked by MaxPreps, he threw 200 completions for 2,435 yards with 27 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He also rushed for 1,241 yards with 10 scores on the ground.Â
South Carolina is hoping to make even more headway on the recruiting trail this weekend, as it is hosting prime flip wide receiver target in four-star Iveon Lewis. Lewis has been a longtime target of Coach Beamer, but they landed him for a visit despite him committing to Kentucky earlier this month.  Â
Congrats to Dow on becoming a Gamecock, and welcome home!
