The South Carolina Gamecocks are gearing up for a pretty important weekend in Columbia. In what has been planned for weeks, five-star cornerback and key Gamecock target Joshua Dobson will be on-campus at South Carolina this weekend.
But a new name was added to South Carolina's visitor list on Friday, and it's a wide receiver who is currently committed to Kentucky. Gamecock Central first reported that four-star receiver Iveon Lewis will be on-hand in Columbia this weekend. Lewis has been a longtime target for the Gamecocks, as South Carolina was the first SEC program to offer Lewis in October of 2023.
In early May, Lewis verbally committed to the Kentucky Wildcats and head coach Mark Stoops. He had South Carolina among his list of final schools, as well as Georgia, Virginia Tech and Maryland.
“It just clicked fast with Kentucky,” Lewis said of the Wildcats via On3Sports last month. “The coaches, the relationships and how I fit into the offense were big for me.”
He also told the outlet that he "didn't need to take other visits," so it could be a positive sign that he will be in Columbia. Lewis' commitment to Kenucky was seen as a big loss for South Carolina at the time. But it's clear that Coach Beamer isn't throwing in the towel on Lewis just yet.
Across two seasons tracked by MaxPreps, Lewis had 71 receptions for 1,736 yards with 24 touchdowns for Huguenot High School in Richmond, Va. The 247Sports Composite ranks Lewis as the No. 49 overall wideout from the class of 2027, and the No. 6 overall prospect out of his home state of Virginia. Here's on official scouting report of Lewis, via Andrew Ivins of 247Sports:
"Aces the eye-test with a sturdy 6-foot-2, 195-pound frame. Rolls out the gate and can overwhelm defensive backs with his momentum. Makes impressive adjustments on tosses towards the boundary and will get large when tracking over the middle on in-breaking routes. Tends to ignite after the catch and can shed tackles as he fights for yardage."
South Carolina's 2027 class includes two wide receivers in four-star Javien Robinson and three-star DJ Huggins, but having too many wideouts in the class isn't necessarily a bad thing.
We'll see if South Carolina's efforts on Lewis will be enough to get him to flip to the Gamecocks, or at the very least de-commit from Kentucky.
