The South Carolina Gamecocks are working to continue on the positive momentum on the recruiting trail.

In the last week, the Gamecocks have made some major headway, including landing several major prospects. Although the Gamecocks landed four-star wide receiver Iveon Lewis and cornerback Kelvin Millington in recent days, the Gamecocks are looking to build on those commitments.

One big target for South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer is four-star safety Davion Jones. Jones, rated as the nation's No. 9 safety for 2027, is coming off a visit to Columbia this past weekend, on June 19. In what could be a good sign for the Gamecocks, Jones has moved up his verbal commitment date from the end of July to Thursday, the 2nd of the month.

Jones, who plays high school football out of Hough High School in Cornelius, N.C., will join his teammate Joshua Dobson in committing on the date. South Carolina is also heavily pursuing Dobson, a five-star cornerback. In fact, the two took their visit together to Columbia on the weekend of June 19.

South Carolina does not have a safety in its 2027 class currently, so it could use Jones' commitment. He is rated as the No. 6 overall prospect out of his home state of North Carolina, and rated No. 140 overall for 2027, per the 247Sports Composite.

But of course, there are plenty of other schools pursuing Jones. He will be choosing between his final schools including Auburn, Georgia, Indiana, LSU and of course South Carolina. He's taken visits to his final schools since May, including a visit to Indiana on May 15, Auburn on June 5, LSU on June 12 and the Gamecocks on the 19th.

While of course Jones moving up his commitment to join his teammate in committing, him doing so coming right off of a South Carolina visit could be a good sign.
