The latest South Carolina Gamecocks news from the last week, starting with some updates from a wildly busy week in recruiting

Starting last weekend, the South Carolina football program has been on a hot streak in recruiting. The Gamecocks have picked up eight commitments according to the social media posting of head coach Shane Beamer. One made his announcement last weekend, and the total of public commitments has grown to seven since then.

Last weekend, linebacker/defensive back Jaquel Holman committed to the Gamecocks, and six more joined him over the following seven days.

EDGE Kobby Sakyi-Prah announced his pledge on Monday.

Defensive back Chris Hatfield followed on Tuesday.

Tight end Preston Douglas was the next day on Wednesday.

Linebacker AJ Holloway joined the party on Friday.

Offensive lineman Shed Sarratt revealed his commitment later on Friday.

Kicker/Punter Max Kelley was the 7th to jump onboard during the hot streak as he did so on Saturday.

Class of 2026 linebacker Shadarius Toodle put the Gamecocks in his top-10.

Six current Gamecocks made Phil Steele's All-SEC preseason squad.

Longsnapper Hunter Rogers (1st team), running back Rocket Sanders (2nd team), linebacker Debo Williams (2nd team), safety Nick Emmanwori (2nd team), punter Kai Kroeger (2nd team), and defensive lineman Tonka Hemingway (4th team) received the honors.

Two all-time Gamecock greats are retiring from the NFL.

Wide receiver Pharoh Cooper and kicker Elliott Fry both revealed this week that they are hanging up their cleats.

South Carolina basketball coach Lamont Paris finalized his 2024-2025 roster.

Guard Austin Herro, a former walk-on, is now on scholarship. He is a redshirt freshman who will fight for bench minutes, primarily at shooting guard.

The Gamecocks have two new non-conference games on the schedule.

The ACC/SEC Challenge will see South Carolina basketball travel to Chestnut Hill to face off with the Boston College Eagles.

In December, the East Carolina Pirates will make a return trip to Columbia (the two teams played in Greenville, North Carolina last year).

Dawn Staley's team will play an up-and-coming ACC foe in the ACC/SEC Challenge.

The Duke Blue Devils have been rebuilding under Kara Lawson but will face the toughest test in women's college basketball, a game against South Carolina in Colonial Life Arena.

After firing Mark Kingston two weeks ago, the South Carolina baseball program has their new leader.

The Gamecocks hired coaching legend Paul Mainieri. The 66 (soon to be 67) year old coach has assembled an elite staff of assistants as Monte Lee (associate head coach/hitting coach) was retained, Terry Rooney (pitching coach/recruiting coordinator) joins the staff, and John Hendry (assistant coach) will assist Rooney with the pitching and recruiting duties.

Gamecock catcher Cole Messina received some well-deserved honors.

In addition to being named the national hitter of the month for May, Messina was named a 2nd team All-American by both Perfect Game and the NCBWA.

The YardCocks secured commitments from two intriguing players who could have dynamic impacts on the 2025 team.

Utilityman Cayden Gaskins (Northwest Florida State College) committed early in the week, and outfielder Dalton Mashore (St. Mary's College) joined the commit list late over the weekend.

Three former Gamecock coaches have new jobs.

Former head coach Mark Kingston has taken the same position with the Creighton Blue Jays.

Former assistant Joey Holcomb has taken an unspecified assistant position with the South Florida Bulls.

Former pitching coach Matt Williams is taking the same position at the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers.

South Carolina softball fired Bev Smith but found her replacement in short order.

Former Gamecock pitcher and graduate assistant coach Ashley Chastain is leaving the Charlotte 49ers (where she had unprecedented success) to return home to her alma mater as head coach.

University of South Carolina Associate AD/Senior Deputy Athletics Director Chance Miller is leaving the school.

After more than a decade at USC, Miller will be the new athletic director at Coastal Carolina University.
