The South Carolina Gamecocks landed their third commitment this week, as four-star cornerback Kelvin Millington committed to the Gamecocks. He picked South Carolina over his final schools in Virginia Tech and Texas Tech.
In a new interview with Gamecock Central, Millington broke down why South Carolina edged out his final schools.
“Probably the number one reason would be the position coach, Coach Gray,” Millington told the outlet. “He has an amazing track record of putting tall, long defensive backs like myself into the league, and I’m hoping to be his next one.”
In April, the Gamecocks saw two former defensive backs drafted in cornerback Brandon Cisse go in the second round to the Green Bay Packers, and safety Jalon Kilgore going in the fifth round to the Buffalo Bills. Gray has been at South Carolina for the last six seasons, and has coached the likes of Brandon Flowers, Kam Chancellor, Kyle Fuller and Kendall Fuller at Virginia Tech; Teez Tabor, Marcus Maye, Quincy Wilson at Florida and Cam Smith, Darius Rush and Nick Emmanwori in Columbia.
The cornerback is rated by the 247Sports Composite as the No. 41 overall player in his position group, and the No. 42 overall prospect from his home state of Georgia. Millington added that his relationship with Coach Beamer and how he feels on campus in Columbia also goes a long way
“I really love Coach Beamer,” Millington added. “He understands where I came from and can relate to my background. I could see him being a really good mentor to me. He is the kind of coach I want to play for.”
With Millington's commitment, South Carolina's 2027 class now ranks 58th nationally per the 247Sports Composite, jumping four spots following his commitment.
“I have been there twice, and it really feels like a home away from home. Everybody up there loves South Carolina, and they treat their players like NFL players.”
South Carolina has some other targets committing in the coming week as well, such as five-star cornerback Joshua Dobson four-star offensive tackle Nate Carson and linebacker Jackson Ross.
Congrats to Millington on his commitment!
