Shane Beamer and the South Carolina Gamecocks are making moves for its 2027 recruiting class. On Wednesday evening, South Carolina added a big-time defensive lineman to its class, as 4-star defensive lineman John Archer officially committed to the Gamecocks.

The news comes as Archer narrowed his list of final schools earlier this week to include the Gamecocks. Archer, who plays high school football out of Seventy-First in Fayetteville, N.C., is North Carolina's No. 6 overall prospect, and 2027's No. 16 ranked defensive tackle per the 247Sports Composite.

With Archer's commitment, South Carolina's 2027 class now has four members and is ranked 56th nationally, jumping nine spots from its previous No. 65 overall spot. The class still ranks last in the SEC, at 16th.

Over three seasons tracked by MaxPreps, Archer accounted for 210 total tackles with nine sacks and 77 tackles for loss.

Archer's commitment could suggest South Carolina can gain some major ground in the coming weeks on the recruiting trail. Several big-time prospects have named South Carolina as a finalist, such as 4-star safety Jayden Aparicio-Bailey, 4-star DE James Pace III and blue-chip receiver Iveon Lewis. Rivals' Chad Simmons even suggested with Archer's commitment that the Gamecocks could be on a streak soon:

Archer could be just the beginning for Shane Beamer's momentum on the recruiting trail. The Gamecocks are set to host a number of prospects over the weekend, so more good news could be coming South Carolina fans' way in no time.
