South Carolina Gamecock News: Former players shine in NFL, WBB starts practice, WNBA action & more

It's a busy time for South Carolina athletics in the fall months. The Gamecocks are in the heart of football season, former players are playing in their respective professional leagues, and practices for fall and winter sports are beginning on-campus.  

As we enter the third week of September, let's get you caught up on some of the biggest Gamecocks sports news. 

Several Gamecocks shine in Week 2 of the NFL 

There were several former Gamecocks playing across the league during Week 2 in the NFL.  The Denver Broncos beat the Jacksonville Jaguars 20-13, helped by this fourth-quarter touchdown reception by tight end Nate Adkins: 

The Dallas Cowboys defeated the Washington Commanders 37-20, but Washington defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw finished with two total tackles, including a sack on Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott: 

The Green Bay Packers beat the New York Jets 20-17. Former Gamecocks Kingsley Enagbare forced a Packers fumble early in the fourth quarter: 

He added a sack that helped the game go into overtime, too: 

Green Bay rookie cornerback Brandon Cisse was also a big day, getting five tackles including a half sack: 

The Carolina Panthers dominated the Atlanta Falcons 34-3, and Xavier Legette had a long receptions from Bryce Young during the win:  

Dawn Staley and South Carolina women's basketball begin practice 

The South Carolina women's basketball program had their first official day of practice on Monday. The Gamecocks are reloading for a 2026-27 season that has big expectations. 

The team includes a mix of veterans and newcomers, including Tessa Johnson, Chloe Kitts, Agot Makeer as well as transfers Brooke Daniels and Jordan Lee, as well as freshmen Jerzy Robinson and Oliviyah Edwards. 

According to Greenville Online's Lulu Kesin, who was on-hand at practice, Alicia Tournebize, who suffered a finger injury last month, had a brace on her injured right hand but was dressed in practice gear. Freshman Robinson also practiced with a brace on her right knee, but went through the full practice.  

It sounds like Coach Staley is trying out some different starting lineups, as well. One starting lineup included Tessa Johnson, Justine Loubens, Chloe Kitts, Agot Makeer and Ashlyn Watkins. A different one featured Brooke Daniels, Jordan Lee, Jerzy Robinson, Joyce Edwards and Oliviyah Edwards. A third was Joyce Edwards, Adhel Tac, Robinson, Lee and Daniels.

Kentucky-South Carolina kickoff time, TV network revealed for Week 5

Speaking of Gamecock women's basketball, we finally got tip-off times for the SEC/ACC challenge in December. For the Gamecocks against the Duke Blue Devils on Dec. 3, tip off is set for 7 p.m. ET:

Former Gamecocks in WNBA make playoff pushes 

The regular season is coming to a close in the WNBA, as this week is the final week before playoffs begin. Las Vegas Aces star A'ja Wilson just made history as the first-ever player in league history to reach 1,000 points in a single season twice. Her Aces will likely get the No. 3 seed. 

The Atlanta Dream which includes three former Gamecocks in Allisha Gray, Te-Hina PaoPao and Madina Okot, are fighting for a No. 4 seed. 

The Indiana Fever's Aliyah Boston, Ty Harris and Caitlin Clark are projected to get a No. 4 seed. Laeticia Amihere and the Golden State Valkyries are likely to earn a No. 2 seed.

The first day of the WNBA playoffs begin on Sept. 27  

Men's and women's Gamecock soccer look to stay hot

Both South Carolina soccer programs are off to hot starts to the season. The men's team plays Charleston at home on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. ET. The women's team is also at home this week playing Kentucky on Thursday evening at 7 p.m.  

Women's tennis picks up wins 

The Gamecocks notched five victories over five days during pre-qualifying matches at the ITA All-American Championships in Cary, N.C. 

In singles Jana Stojanova beat Florida State’s MaryBoyce Deatherage in three sets, and Bella Bergqvist Larsson defeated Minnesota’s Massiva Boukirat, 6-1, 7-6 in two.  Stojanova als got a two-set win over NC State’s Amelie Smejkalova. Bergqvist Larsson defeated SMU’s Carolina McGinley in two sets, and Pietra Rivoli picked up a win against Clemson’s Celia Anson Sanchez.
