South Carolina notched their first victory of the season on Saturday, beating Kent State 57-0 in impressive fashion. But a little over 36 hours later, Gamecock true freshman tight end Caden Ramsey was arrested on early Monday morning.
Ramsey, who is from Cross, S.C., was arrested for "racing on a public road." According to The State newspaper, Ramsey was arrested in Berkeley County, which encompasses Moncks Corner, and booked into the county jail at 4:02 a.m. The newspaper also reported that Ramsey has a hearing for his bond scheduled for 6:30 p.m. ET on Monday.
“We are aware of the situation with freshman tight end Caden Ramsey and take matters like this seriously,” a South Carolina Athletics spokesperson told The State via a statement. “We reserve further comment at this time.”
Ramsey played in six snaps during the Kent State game on Saturday. In fact, Ramsey was named the Gamecocks' scout player of the week after Saturday's contest, along with defensive lineman Caleb Williams and defensive back Triston Lewis. South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer is expected to speak with the media on Tuesday at his weekly press conference. He will likely address Ramsey's status with the team during his availability.

Coming out of high school, Ramsey was rated as a three-star tight end recruit out of Cross High School. He was rated as the No. 19 overall prospect out of the state of South Carolina. He joined the Gamecocks this summer. Per MaxPreps, he had 115 receptions for 1,903 yards with 24 touchdowns across three seasons tracked by the outlet.
South Carolina's off-field issues have been relatively quiet this offseason. In mid-June, Ohio State transfer Sam Williams-Dixon was arrested for allegedly stealing items from multiple vehicles on-campus. But shortly after his arrest, he was dismissed from the Gamecock team by head coach Shane Beamer. Defensive lineman Davonte Miles was arrested in February, and was released from the team shortly thereafter.
South Carolina is set to take on the FCS Towson Tigers at home in Week 2, with kickoff set for 7 p.m. ET. The week after, the Gamecocks open SEC play against the Mississippi State Bulldogs at home.
