5 things we learned from South Carolina's 57-0 blowout win vs. Kent State

The South Carolina Gamecocks were eager to take the field on Saturday, opening the 2026 season at home against Kent State. As South Carolina played in what was the hottest temperature ever for a game at Williams-Brice Stadium, the Gamecocks looked even hotter. 

South Carolina led 29-0, and didn't let its foot off the gas in the second half. The final score was 57-0.  

Here are the biggest takeaways from the Gamecocks' season-opening win over Kent State on Saturday. 

1. South Carolina's offense rebounded after a sloppy first possession

If Gamecock fans were eager to see South Carolina start out the season red-hot, they likely weren't too happy with the first possession on offense. It looked eerily similar to South Carolina's unit last year, which had numerous penalties, and quarterback LaNorris Sellers was sacked 42 times. 

The Gamecocks' first drive included a false start penalty and a Sellers sack. The drive lasted just seven plays for 18 yards, and the Gamecocks were forced to punt from their own 40 yard line. 

But South Carolina cleaned that up real quick, as the Gamecocks scored on all eight of their consecutive drives, scoring 57 unanswered points.  

The offense was so successful that Sellers' backup, redshirt freshman Cutter Woods came in for him at the end of the third quarter when South Carolina was up by 43 points. While the Gamecocks did finish the day with three penalties for 25 yards, they did not kill any momentum on drives that stalled the offense. Sellers was sacked just the one time. 

That's about as best a debut you can ask for after an offense In all, South Carolina finished the day The Gamecocks finished last season tied for 95th in penalties last season, with 88 all season. It's only Week 1 against Kent State, but it was massively encouraging for the Gamecocks to score on eight of nine of their offensive possessions. 

On the day, South Carolina finished a whopping 645 yards of offense and 57 points. That's a great way to show fans you're heading in the right direction after a 4-8 season. 

2. LaNorris Sellers looks quite comfortable, folks

Returning star quarterback LaNorris Sellers was making one of the country's most anticipated debuts on Saturday. After a severe regression last season, Shane Beamer hired Kendal Briles and landed several transfers along the offensive line to help turn things around. 

It's safe to say Sellers looked like his old self again, folks. The Gamecock redshirt junior finished the day missing on just four of his passes, going 19-of-23 for 270 yards and three touchdowns. While he didn't have to run the ball much given how productive  the offense was, he did have a nice designed quarterback keeper on a third down.  

He had a couple of balls that were thrown a tad bit short of his receivers, but all in all it was a great day. His offensive line held up great, giving him plenty of time to throw and let plays develop downfield. You could tell he was comfortable behind his line, and could see him successfully going through his reads. 

3. There are no shortage of weapons for Sellers to throw to

At the beginning of fall camp, South Carolina fans received the devastating news that receivers Jayden Gibson and Jayden Sellers would be out for the season with injuries. It raised plenty of questions regarding South Carolina's depth at the receiver position. 

Well Sellers and the offense took care of all that doubt early. What stood out for South Carolina offensively was how multiple the Gamecocks' receiving threats were. Sophomore Donavan Murph led the group, getting four receptions for 92 yards and two touchdowns, averaging 23 yards per reception. You could tell Sellers and Murph already have a deep connection: 

Nyck Harbor had five catches for 70 yards, and DJ Black added three catches for 62 yards, and Lex Cyrus had three catches for 53 yards, including a long 41-yard catch he caught from Woods in the third quarter. Mazeo Bennett Jr. and Columbia native Mike Tyler hauled in a touchdown each, as well. 

It's clear that Briles has no shortage of weapons for Sellers to throw to, and that's encouraging for this offense early. The wideouts also looked comfortable throughout the passing game.

4. Hello, run game! 

South Carolina's run game was abysmal last season, as the Gamecocks finished the year 119th nationally, averaging just 111 yards on the ground per game. New South Carolina running backs coach Stan Drayton showed off what his new scheme can do, as the Gamecocks finished with 286 yards on the ground. 

Penn State transfer Jabree Coleman, who followed Drayton from Happy Valley, led the unit, getting 77 yards on four carries with two touchdowns. He had just about the best South Carolina debut you can imagine. On his very first carry of the game, he went 60 yards to the house: 

But returning running back Matt Fuller also had a solid day, getting 10 carries for 74 yards and a touchdown, scoring South Carolina's first score of the day:

5. Shane Beamer gets his first defensive shutout since 2021 

Of course, South Carolina was a heavy favorite against Kent State from the MAC. But the defense played lights out, holding the Golden Flashes to just 179 total yards, 10 first downs and 5-of-14 on third downs. Kent State was able to get 100 yards rushing on the day, but anytime you can shut out your opponent is a great start to the season. 

Speaking of shutouts, it was the first for Beamer since beating rival Clemson 30-0 in 2021 during Rivalry Week. 

In what was Coach Beamer's biggest offseason of his career, he answered a lot of the questions facing this South Carolina team from last season. Of course, it's a long season, and there is a lot of football left to be played. But you couldn't have asked for a better debut for this South Carolina team.
