South Carolina-Florida will be hostile atmosphere thanks to Gators' HBC jersey combo

South Carolina already has one of the toughest road schedules in the country, featuring road games against Alabama, Florida, Oklahoma and Clemson. The Oct. 10 game against the Gators will mark a renewal of an SEC Easy rivalry. 

The atmosphere in The Swamp in Gainesville, Fla. is among one of the best in the country, and Florida fans will be ready for it. But there could be a big reason why Gator fans will be especially amped up for this one—Florida's jersey combination. 

The Gators announced their jersey combinations for all 12 of Florida's games this season, including against the Gamecocks. For the Oct. 10 game against South Carolina, the Gators will wear an all-white uniform paired with a blue helmet that has a throwback "F" logo on it. The jersey and helmet combination are to pay homage to Florida's 1966 season, during which Steve Spurrier won the Heisman Trophy.

“A tribute to Coach Spurrier and the 1966 Heisman year,” new Florida head coach Jon Sumrall said via Gators Online of the combo. “I’ve seen them, and I’m excited about them. Looking forward to them. Long way off from actually wearing them, but I do think they’re a cool tribute and such a cool look.” 

The 2026 game will mark the first meeting between the Gators and Gamecocks since 2023. Florida holds a 31-3-10 all-time lead in the series, and the Gators have won the last two meetings against Shane Beamer in 2022 and 2023.  

Spurrier holds a special place in both programs' fanbases, as he was a head coach at both schools. He will likely be on-hand for the matchup, since he resides in Gainesville and has been named an ambassador for the athletics department since 2016. In fact, he is still the winningest head coach at both schools, having won 135 games at South Carolina from 2005-2015, and 122 at Florida from 1990-2001, including the school's first-ever national title in 1996 in both schools' histories. 

When Spurrier was at Florida in the 90s, he never lost to the Gamecocks during his entire tenure there. He did well at South Carolina against Florida when he was HBC in Columbia, winning four out of five games from 2010-2014.   

As for South Carolina, the Gamecocks have already previously announced that they will wear white jerseys and tops with a garnet helmet for away games, with an all-garnet, black helmet combo for home games. But since Florida will already be wearing all white, the Gamecocks will likely be wearing their garnet tops and pants for this one. 

As for the game itself, it should be a close contest. Both Florida and South Carolina are rebuilding this year, with the Gators hiring Sumrall with hopes of bringing the program out of its funk under previous hires Billy Napier, Dan Mullen and Jim McElwain fizzled out. Gamecock head coach Shane Beamer is hoping his offseason of rebuilding the offensive line and overhauling his coaching staff can help rebound from a 4-8 season in 2025. Florida has the clear home field advantage in this one, as South Carolina has won just two games in Gainesville in its entire 44-game history, with the last coming in 2014.

The South Carolina-Florida game will come a few weeks after the Gamecocks' road game against the Alabama Crimson Tide, with a home game against Kentucky right before.
