Gamecock fans received come welcome but expected news on Wednesday when four-star safety J'Zavien Currence officially announced that his recruitment is "shut down." The native of Rock Hill, SC reaffirmed his pledge to South Carolina via social media, making it quite clear that he is staying home. A top-100 national prospect in the 2026 class, Currence has been locked in with Shane Beamer since his pledge last fall, and he has been a faithful with his commitment since. He took an official visit in June, where he told GamecockCentral, "This is where I'm going...South Carolina."

During that visit to Columbia, Currence also embraced a new role in South Carolina football as a peer recruiter. He spent quality time talking to fellow top-100 DB Samari Matthews, as well as some high-profile targets like QB Landon Duckworth, five-star lineman Darius Gray, safety Tamarion Watkins, WR Somourian Wingo, and recent commit Sequel Patterson.
The 6-foot-3, 210-pound Currence combines physical readiness with a developmental upside. He has built a reputation for being a high-IQ, high-motor player who takes the time to study the game with discipline. According to On3 Industry Ranking, Currence is the No. 99 overall prospect in the country, the No. 8 safety nationally, and the No. 1 player in the state of South Carolina. Two major recruiting services have rated him as the Gamecocks' top commit in the class.
With nine commitments, South Carolina's 2026 class ranks at No. 21 nationally, and more blue-chip announcements may be well on the way.
