It's a great time to be part of South Carolina baseball, folks. New Gamecocks head coach Kevin Schnall has landed several prospects in recent days, with most of them coming to the Gamecocks from the transfer portal. On Tuesday afternoon, Coach Schnall picked up another commit from Garrett Michel, who is a rising redshirt senior from Arizona State.Â
This past season for the Sun Devils, Michel batted .277 with an on-base percentage of .831. He added two home runs with another 20 RBI.Â
Prior to his time at Arizona State, he started his career at Virginia Tech. He was slightly limited due to injury his last two seasons there in 2024 and 2025, playing in just 36 games across those two years. He still was able to combine for 39 hits with six home runs and 32 RBI during those games, however.Â
Gamecocks expected to be in the mix in landing Coastal Carolina pitcher Cameron Flukey
As a true freshman for the Hokies in 2023, he started in all 53 games for Virginia Tech. He had a .339 batting average with 58 hits, 11 home runs and .465 on-base percentage.Â

Michel played in 49 games at ASU this past season, slashing .277/.392/.438 with three home runs and 20 RBIs as the Sun Devils primary DH.@DevilsDigest pic.twitter.com/hXKW8EmPfi
Michel posted his commitment to South Carolina via a post on his Instagram. Since this is his third school that he will have played for, the 2026-27 season with the Gamecocks will be the final of his NCAA eligibility. He is originally from Stanley, N.C. so he'll be able to play his senior baseball season much closer to home.
Congrats to Michel, and welcome home to Columbia!Â
