Roughly 36 hours after South Carolina's big win over Kent State to start off the season 1-0, a Gamecock player was in the news for the wrong reasons. Early on Monday morning, true freshman tight end Caden Ramsey was arrested in Berkeley County for racing on a public road.
Ramsey had played in six snaps for the Gamecocks in the season-opener against the Golden Flashes, and was even named the scout team player of the week for the Gamecocks. South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer met with the media on Tuesday, and confirmed that the tight end is now suspended from the team.
“Met with Caden this morning," Beamer said via Gamecock Central. Right now, he is suspended from the team,” Beamer said. “I’m in communication with [athletic director] Jeremiah Donati and [senior deputy AD] Jeff Crane in regards to his status. Extremely disappointing. Caden was just named our scout team player of the week last week. That’s not his nature. Knowing the young man, we’ve never had a single issue with him since he’s been here."
Ramsey joined South Carolina's team this summer. He was named the scout team player of the week along with defensive lineman Caleb Williams and defensive back Triston Lewis. The tight end is from Cross, S.C., the same county that he was arrested in.
According to a police report obtained by The State newspaper, an officer reported that he saw "two vehicles weaving in and out of traffic, making several erratic lane changes, and traveling at an estimated 110 mph.” The posted speed limit on the road was 60 miles per hour.
“We talked about it," Beamer continued of Ramsey via Gamecock Central. "You absolutely can’t do that. We’ve had plenty of conversations about driving and not driving too fast and the recklessness of that. So he and I met this morning. He understands he made a mistake, and we’ll handle it internally."

“Caden is a good young man and a dedicated student-athlete with a bright future," Ramsey's attorney, Seth Rose, told The State in a statement. "This is a pending citation, not a finding of guilt.”
Ramsey is just 19 years old.
South Carolina has had a relatively quiet offseason in terms of off the field issues. In February, defensive lineman Davonte Miles was arrested, but was subsequently released from the team. In mid-June, Ohio State transfer Sam Williams-Dixon was arrested for allegedly stealing items from multiple vehicles on-campus. But shortly after his arrest, he was dismissed from the Gamecock team by Beamer.
For now, it appears as though Ramsey is suspended from the team pending any further action with his court case. The tight end was not listed on South Carolina's depth chart released on Sept. 7 entering Week 2 against Towson.
