The GOAT of South Carolina basketball now officially the GOAT of the Las Vegas Aces
By Kevin Miller
There is not much argument to be had that anyone other than A'ja Wilson is the GOAT (greatest of all-time) of the South Carolina basketball program. Aliyah Boston and others have spectacular resumes, too, but Wilson sits alone at the top.
There also is not much argument to be had that anyone other than A'ja Wilson is the GOAT for her WNBA squad, the Las Vegas Aces. With all due respect to players like Becky Hammon (the team's current head coach), Kelsey Plum (Wilson's current teammate) Sophia Young-Malcolm (the franchise's leading scorer), and Margo Dydek (FIBA Hall of Famer and the tallest female professional ever), Wilson is the best player ever to play for the WNBA franchise that has spent time in Utah, San Antonio, and Las Vegas.
On Sunday, Wilson made things official by becoming the Las Vegas Aces' all-time leading scorer, surpassing Young-Malcolm's previous record of 4300 points. A 28-point performance in a win over the Dallas Wings gave Wilson 4301 career points, allowing her to break the scoring record at home in front of the Vegas fans. She also posted another double-double in the contest.
For now, that number puts Wilson 39th in the history of the WNBA and 11th among active players. However, as she is just 27 years old, the soon-to-be three-time MVP has plenty of points ahead of her.
Wilson and New York Liberty star Breanna Stewart routinely flip back-and-forth between 2nd and 3rd place in league history in points per game (behind Hall of Famer Cynthia Cooper). The current all-time leader in points scored is Diana Taurasi, who is expected to retire after the 2024 season. To challenge Taurasi's record, Wilson would need to play at least 8 more seasons at her career averages as she has less than half the total points scored in her career than the 42 year old Taurasi.
The South Carolina basketball legend will begin chipping away at Taurasi's record on Wednesday as the Aces will travel to the Pacific Northwest to take on the Seattle Storm.
