Major in-state flip candidate visiting South Carolina football on Saturday
By Kevin Miller
Shane Beamer's South Carolina football team is 2-1 heading into their fourth game of the season, and the Akron Zips are coming into town to play in front of what is another sold-out crowd at Williams-Brice Stadium.
One of the most important names in attendance on Saturday is one very familiar to Gamecock fans.
In-state 4-star wide receiver Malik Clark, who surprisingly committed to the Florida State Seminoles this July, spurned the South Carolina football program and the North Carolina Tar Heels despite the two programs from the Carolinas being viewed as the favorites for most of his recruitment. However, the Gamecocks haven't given up on recruiting the speedy wideout, and the Palmetto State native will visit the program on Saturday.
The Akron-South Carolina meeting will be under the lights (kickoff is set for 7:30 PM ET, and the game will be broadcast on ESPNU and streamed on the ESPN app), and Clark will be among the recruiting visitors.
Given Florida State's struggles so far this season and the Gamecocks looking a little better than some expected, Coach Beamer and his staff are hoping to give Clark something to think about in the final months of his recruitment.
As a player, Clark has the potential to be a special offensive talent. Listed between 6'2" and 6'3" by most recruiting services, he has solid size for the wide receiver position. He has elite sprint speed, too, something he has demonstrated both in the 40-yard dash (he's been clocked in the 4.3s) and in the 100-meter dash as a track and field athlete (he's run times in the 10.5 range).
Clark, who plays for Rock Hill High School, is a consensus 4-star prospect and one of the top-rated players in the state of South Carolina. If he were to flip his commitment to the home-state Gamecocks, Clark would join 3-star Jayden Sellers and 4-stars Lex Cyrus and Brian Rowe as receiver pledges in the class of 2025.
