The 2024 version of the South Carolina football team has a lot of veteran wide receivers. Between returners like Luke Doty and Payton Mangrum and new transfer portal additions like Gage Larvadain, Dalevon Campbell, and Ahmari Huggins-Bruce, the Gamecocks have five players at the position in their final year of college eligibility.

Because of that, USC needs to replenish the coffers at wide receiver. The transfer portal likely will play a role in that pursuit, but the Gamecocks seem set to sign a pretty large high school class at the position, as well.

So far, 4-star Brian Rowe and 3-star Jayden Sellers have pledged their services to the Gamecocks, and wide receivers coach Mike Furrey is in hot pursuit of several other receivers in the class of 2025. One of those high school recruits made his public commitment on Thursday.

In the afternoon on Thursday, South Carolina football target Lex Cyrus, a 4-star prospect from the state of Pennsylvania, announced his college commitment. With a revealed top-2 of the South Carolina Gamecocks and Penn State Nittany Lions, it was a battle between the home-state school and an SEC opportunity, and during his commitment ceremony, Cyrus announced his pledge to Coach Furrey and the Gamecocks.

As a player, Cyrus has elite quickness and acceleration, and his ability to make opponents miss is what sets him apart from other players. He will join the program as the type of athlete who can contribute early, and once he has some time to develop his body for the college game, he could be a special player in Columbia.

The Gamecocks are still involved heavily with Rock Hill, South Carolina native Malik Clark, a 4-star prospect. They also have a couple of other receivers on the board in the '25 cycle. Multiple in-state players in the class of 2026 (including Jordon Gidron and Donovan Murph) are 4-star prospects high on Carolina's board.

Cyrus is now the top-rated recruit in the class according to On3's rankings.
