Longtime South Carolina 5-star target predicted to land elsewhere in the SEC

College football recruiting never stops, and Shane Beamer and the South Carolina Gamecocks are building their 2027 class. Although the class now features six members, including newly-added guys like receiver DJ Huggins and tight end Judah Lancaster, the Gamecocks are going hard after 5-star cornerback Joshua Dobson. 

Dobson, who plays out of Hough High School in Cornelius, N.C., has been a longtime South Carolina target. The Gamecocks were one of the first schools to offer him back in May 2024. Although Dobson remains uncommitted and has a visit scheduled to Columbia for June 19, Steve Wiltfong of Rivals.com logged a new prediction for Dobson.

Wiltfong predicts Dobson will ultimately land in College Station with the Texas A&M Aggies:  

Dobson has an official visit with the Aggies scheduled for June 5—a full two weeks before he is set to be in Columbia. Dobson is the nation's No. 3 overall cornerback for 2027 per the 247Sports Composite, and is ranked as North Carolina's No. 1 overall prospect. He holds offers from a slew of big-time schools, including Alabama, LSU, Clemson, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, Ohio State, Texas and Notre Dame.  

Obviously nothing is set in stone just yet, but this would be a big blow to South Carolina's 2027 class. It currently has just one defensive back in safety Jernard Albright, and ranks just 43rd nationally. The Gamecocks also lost cornerback Aamaury Fountain to SEC rival Florida just last month.   

Hopefully Wiltfong's prediction proves to be incorrect, or that South Carolina's coaches can make up some ground. But the timing of Dobson's visit to Texas A&M coming before he is set to step foot officially on South Carolina's campus might be a bad omen for the Gamecocks.
