The Head Ball Coach might be 81 years old, but the boy man's still got it. On Monday evening, Steve Spurrier was inducted into the 64th annual South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame, alongside several others, including former NFL defensive lineman and former Gamecock Andrew Provence.
During Spurrier's induction speech, he of course didn't miss the opportunity to throw a jab at Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney.
In the speech, he described how when he first arrived at South Carolina, he told the school he wanted to be the Gamecocks' winningest head coach in school history. To do so, he'd have to reach 65 wins, surpassing former South Carolina head coach Rex Enright.
Spurrier continued that during his eighth season, he did just that, reaching his 65th win. He then thanked Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney, whose team "didn't play very well that night," which helped him get the 65th win:
Of course, his speech also included him giving Swinney a brief compliment on his national titles and conference titles he's won at Clemson. That was before quickly pointing out that he beat Swinney and the Tigers five years in a row from 2009-2013.
Spurrier finished his South Carolina career with an impressive 5-2 record against Swinney while coaching for the Gamecocks. The HBC had ribbed Swinney before, once giving extraterrestrial answer when asked about his relationship with Coach Swinney:
"He's from Pluto, and I'm from Mars." Spurrier responded: "Dabo probably thinks there's only, what, nine planets out there? I think I read where Pluto may not be considered one now."
He also hilariously (and accurately, I might add) pointed out that South Carolina fans would rather beat Clemson during a given season than win an SEC title:
“What I've also learned at South Carolina, our fans realize there's more to life than winning the SEC championship. They really do. We're in a state with Clemson. Clemson used to pretty much own South Carolina in football, no question about it. We have a state championship trophy. If you ask our fans at South Carolina, I can assure you a majority would say, ‘We would rather beat Clemson than win the SEC.' That is how big it is to them, that one game. Personally, I'd rather win the SEC. I don't mind saying that. Personally, that's the bigger trophy.”
Perhaps there will be more jabs to come towards Swinney from Spurrier. The HBC announced earlier this month that there will be a new book coming about his coaching days in Columbia.
South Carolina fans hope you never stop throwing jabs at Dabo, HBC. Keep on keepin' on.
