South Carolina's winningest head coach of all time in Steve Spurrier is celebrating a birthday on Monday. April 20th, 2026 marks the Head Ball Coach's 80th trip around the sun.

It's hard to believe but 2026 marks 11 years since Spurrier retired, after an unprecedented head coaching career at Duke, Florida and South Carolina.

In honor of HBC's big day, let's take a look back at some of his greatest quotes that will forever live in college football lore.

Taking jabs at Georgia

The Georgia Bulldogs were a rival of Spurrier-coached teams at both Florida and South Carolina. While Spurrier was in Columbia, he delivered one of his most famous quotes while taking a shot at Georgia. Usually South Carolina and Georgia played early in the season, typically Week 2 or Week 3. But in 2012, the game was moved to later in the season.

Spurrier pointed out that he preferred playing the Dawgs earlier in the season, due to Georgia's frequency of having key players suspended for the first couple games of the season.

"I don't know. I sort of always liked playing them that second game because you could always count on them having two or three key players suspended."

Against Georgia, Spurrier had an impressive 11-1 record while he was the head coach at Florida. While at South Carolina, he finished 5-5 against the Dawgs.

"Why is it that during recruiting season they sign all the great players," Spurrier once said about Georgia's recruiting. But when it comes time to play the game, we have all the great players? I don't understand that. What happens to them?"

Auburn library fire

Back when Spurrier was at Florida, Auburn had a fire break out at a library. Naturally, Spurrier didn't pass up the opportunity to throw a jab.

"The real tragedy was that 15 hadn't been colored yet."

Florida State stands for something other than FSU

"You know what FSU stands for, don't you? Free Shoes University."

Citrus Bowls and Tennessee

During Spurrier's years at Florida, the Vols missed out on the Sugar Bowl quite a bit. The HBC finished 8-4 against Tennssee when he was Florida's head coach. As a result, Tennessee played in three Citrus Bowls over four seasons from 1993-1996.  in the 1990s

"You can't spell Citrus without U-T."

Speaking of Tennessee!

At SEC Media Days in 2015, what would be Spurrier's last prior to his retirement, Spurrier's team was coming off of a 7-6 season, the same mark as Arkansas and Tennessee. It was a big drop-off from South Carolina's 11-4 season in 2013, and Spurrier took a shot at both the Vols and Razorbacks fans for being happy with going 7-6.

Clemson and Dabo Swinney were also called out

Of course, Spurrier is known for his dislike of rivals. When Spurrier was at South Carolina, Dabo Swinney had started building Clemson into a perennial power. But Spurrier had an impressive 5-2 record against Swinney while coaching for the Gamecocks. The HBC once gave an extraterrestrial answer when asked about his relationship with Coach Swinney:

"He's from Pluto, and I'm from Mars." Spurrier responded: "Dabo probably thinks there's only, what, nine planets out there? I think I read where Pluto may not be considered one now."

He also hilariously (and accurately, I might add) pointed out that South Carolina fans would rather beat Clemson during a given season than win an SEC title:

“What I've also learned at South Carolina, our fans realize there's more to life than winning the SEC championship. They really do. We're in a state with Clemson. Clemson used to pretty much own South Carolina in football, no question about it. We have a state championship trophy. If you ask our fans at South Carolina, I can assure you a majority would say, ‘We would rather beat Clemson than win the SEC.' That is how big it is to them, that one game. Personally, I'd rather win the SEC. I don't mind saying that. Personally, that's the bigger trophy.”

“We were 7-6. Same as Tennessee, same as Arkansas. I think they're sorta celebratin' big seasons last year. ... There are people in Knoxville and Fayetteville still doing cartwheels over going 7-6."

Happy 80th birthday, Head Ball Coach! One of the best to ever do it from behind a microphone and on the sidelines.
