Congratulations to the South Carolina women's basketball team for winning a share in the 2024-2025 SEC regular season title with the Texas Longhorns. Even in a season where the Gamecocks suffered a few more losses than usual, the Gamecocks finished the season strong and still found a way to have some sort of share of the title.

South Carolina and Texas tied for the best record in the SEC, which meant that the No. 1 seed in the SEC women's basketball tournament was up for grabs. Due to the teams finishing the season with the same record, the rules state that a coin flip would decide who would have the No. 1 seed in the tournament.

A coin flip? That is what it all came down to.

The reason it came down to a coin flip is because the other methods of breaking the tie did not work either. The conference goes to head-to-head matchups, which the Gamecocks and Longhorns split this season. Then they go to how they faired against the rest of the conference, which both teams were undefeated against. So a coin flip it was.

Luckily, South Carolina won and will be the No. 1 seed in the SEC Tournament for the fourth season in a row, but the SEC needs to figure out a way to make sure this doesn't happen again.

There has to be a better way to break the tie other than a coin flip. Look at the overall record, look at the strength of the schedule, and look at home wins vs. away wins. There has to be another avenue the SEC can take instead of flipping a coin and leaving all the hard work up to chance.

Yes, a lot of people can say, "Well, win the games and don't leave it up to chance," and to those people, it should be said to go out on the court and compete the way these teams do and see that it is so much harder than just going out and winning every game.

All-in-all, South Carolina came out on top this time, but something has to change for the next time because a coin flip leaves way too much up to chance.
