It's no secret that 2026 is a make-or-break season for head coach Shane Beamer and the South Carolina Gamecocks. Following a 4-8 season last year, even Coach Beamer is admitting he is entering the season on the hot seat.

To Beamer's credit, there is plenty of optimism surrounding South Carolina thanks to coaching staff changes and players landed via the transfer portal and on the recruiting trail. Unfortunately for South Carolina, the Gamecocks have to navigate one of toughest schedules in the country.

On Friday, ESPN's Football Power Index released strength of schedule rankings for all 138 FBS teams for the 2026 schedule. Included in the resume section is a team's strength of schedule, which measures how strong your home and away schedule is compared to the rest of the country.

South Carolina's strength of schedule checked in at No. 10 overall nationally, making it one of the hardest in the country. Here's a look at the full top 10:

  1. Arkansas Razorbacks
  2. Oklahoma Sooners
  3. Texas Longhorns
  4. Kentucky Wildcats
  5. Ole Miss Rebels
  6. Mississippi State Bulldogs
  7. Florida Gators
  8. Ohio State Buckeyes
  9. Texas A&M Aggies
  10. South Carolina Gamecocks

As you can see, the Gamecocks' schedule isn't exactly a cake walk, and the Gamecocks being included in FPI's Top-10 strength of schedules isn't a huge surprise. It includes road trips to Alabama, Florida, Oklahoma and Clemson, as well as home games vs. playoff teams from last season in Tennessee, Texas A&M and Georgia.

As for the questions regarding his future with South Carolina, Beamer isn't too worried about that, entering a critical 2026 season.

“I don’t think about that at all," the head coach said via a recent interview with The Post & Courier. "Never have, never will. My efforts and thinking are to this team and y’all have heard me say, you’ve heard me say many times, it’s truly year to year,” Beamer said. “So what do I have to be doing right now to make 2026 the best that it can be? But you understand that’s just what you sign up for.”

Realistically, given Coach Beamer's 30-33 overall record in Columbia, the Gamecocks likely need to at least be bowl eligible in 2026. Only time will tell if that will happen, but the tough schedule puts even more pressure on Beamer during the 2026 season. The best case scenario for South Carolina is to overachieve and reach eight, nine or even 10 wins as it navigates a particularly hard schedule.
