After the board of Trustees approved the promotion, Mike Shula has officially been named the offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach for the South Carolina Gamecocks. Shula replaced former offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains, who left the Gamecocks to take the head coaching position at Appalachian State earlier this month.

Shula brings a wealth of experience as an offensive coordinator to head coach Shane Beamer's staff. Not only has Shula been in the college ranks, but he also spent a considerable amount of time in the NFL with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Miami Dolphins, Jacksonville Jaguars, Carolina Panthers, New York Giants, Buffalo Bills, and Denver Broncos. Shula's time with Carolina is the most notable, as he was there when Cam Newton was drafted and helped develop the young quarterback.

South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers has drawn a lot of comparisons to Newton as both are big-bodied quarterbacks who can be very dangerous running the ball. The long-time coach also most recently spent two seasons with the Buffalo Bills and quarterback Josh Allen, who is a threat in the run game but also has a big arm, just like Sellers.

Shula spent a lot of time with Sellers on the sideline this past season working as a Senior offensive assistant coach, so becoming the offensive coordinator should be a swift change.

Not only did Shula spend time in the NFL, but he began his football career as a quarterback at Alabama and then became the head coach for the Tide from 2003 to 2006.

In his new position, Shula has been given a three-year contract that will keep him with the Gamecocks through the 2027 season. Shula is not the only coach to be getting a raise in a matter of way as nine other South Carolina football coordinators were approved for a raise by the Board of Trustees.
