The South Carolina Gamecocks baseball program is rebuilding under new head coach Kevin Schnall. Although the Gamecocks' new head coach has done a great job at landing several players from the transfer portal, he has benefitted from some key returnees, as well.Â
One big piece of returning talent is infielder Patrick Evans. On Friday, the Gamecocks starter from last season posted a reel to his Instagram account, which was captioned "Year 2!"
This is a big deal for the Gamecocks, as Evans made 50 starts for South Carolina last season. He is a playmaker on offense, as he had a .455 slugging percentage, including 25 runs scored with 14 doubles, two triples and eight homers, along with eight home runs and 20 RBI. He was South Carolina's second-leading double hitter, and went 8-for-10 in stolen bases, as well. Â
Under new South Carolina hitting coach Bill Cilento, whom Schnall hired from Wake Forest last month, Evans could have his best season yet with the Gamecocks. He will be a senior for the Gamecocks in 2027, and will have two seasons of eligibility remaining. He joins some heavy offensive hitters that have joined South Carolina from the portal, including Texas Tech transfer Connor Shouse, Auburn's Bristol Carter and Wake Forest's Luke Costello and JD Stein.
Kevin Schnall's transfer portal class shows commitment to building elite roster
Prior to coming to South Carolina, Evans played two seasons for Florence-Darlington Technical College in Florence, S.C. As a sophomore in 2025, he hit .453 with 10 home runs, 75 RBI and 18 stolen bases. As a freshman in 2024 he hit .383 with 27 runs scored, as well as 17 RBI. He is a native of Leesville, S.C.
Evans will join the likes of big returning starters for the Gamecocks including Tyler Bak and Brandon Cromer, as well as pitchers Cooper Parks, Parker Marlatt and Brandon Stone.
It's obviously very early to predict how the 2026 season at South Carolina will go, but new head coach Kevin Schnall is winning on the roster-building front. Schnall comes to South Carolina after spending the last two seasons at Coastal Carolina as the Chanticleers' head coach, previously serving as a longtime assistant there. Congrats to Evans on returning home to Columbia!
