Another big decision is looming on the recruiting front for South Carolina football. Class of 2026 defensive back Jowell Combay confirmed to GamecockCentral that he will announce his commitment to a program on July 9. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound powerhouse out of Kell High School in Marietta, GA named South Carolina as one of his top five schools. The other programs include Tennessee, Georgia, Missouri, and Wisconsin. Combay has already taken official visits to South Carolina and Missouri, as well as Tennessee and Wisconsin. While Georgia looms large, most signs are starting to point to this being a South Carolina vs. Tennessee battle.
Combay is officially listed as a safety by recruiting sites, but he is a true flex. He is capable of playing corner, safety, or nickel at the next level. His versatility paired with his size and athleticism, makes him an ideal fit for South Carolina. He was named Region Athlete of the Year in the state's deep 6A-3 region last year. He is ranked No. 596 overall by On3, but his offer list suggest that he is vastly under-ranked and undervalued.
The Gamecocks already hold two defensive back commitments in the 2026 class, including J'Zavien Currenc and KJ Johnson. Could Combay be the next one to wear the garnet and black? We will find out on July 9!
