The South Carolina Gamecocks lost a quarterback commit on Monday evening. It's not often you hear of a signal-caller flipping from the Gamecocks to a non-power school, but that's precisely what happened. Â
Although he had committed earlier in the month on June 5, 2027 quarterback Luke Gaither announced he was flipping his commitment Monday from South Carolina to Coastal Carolina:Â
T/Y @CoachSBeamer, @kendalbriles, and everyone at South Carolina for giving me the opportunity to be a P4 QB in the SEC.

After much prayer, I’ve decided to pursue my lifelong dream of being a full-scholarship D1 QB at @CoastalFootball.

While it's important to note that Gaither, who is not rated by 247Sports or Rivals, committed to the Gamecocks as a preferred walk-on. Obviously if Gaither was a nationally ranked commit, him flipping to Coastal would be a huge story. Â
Still, losing out on a verbal commit to a non-power, in-state school like Coastal Carolina isn't exactly the best look for Shane Beamer or South Carolina. Especially when its 2027 class has just nine members, ranking 67th nationally. Â
South Carolina and Coastal Carolina lie roughly 156 miles apart from each other, with Coastal sitting just outside of Myrtle Beach. The two football programs have played each other three times, in 2013, 2018 and last season. South Carolina has won all three meetings handily, by a combined margin of 170-32. Although the two programs are not schedule to meet in 2026, one could assume the two teams will meet at some point in the future.
But in the end, Coastal Carolina head coach Ryan Beard won the day for Gaither. South Carolina recently added Brooks Dow as a preferred walk-on quarterback to its 2027 class.Â
