South Carolina and Alabama have had some big moments in their series history
South Carolina and Alabama have not had a lot of meetings on the football field, but some of their most recent meetings have been some of the more exciting ones.
The Gamecocks and the Crimson Tide met for the first time back in 1937 in Tuscaloosa. there is not much to say about the first 10 meetings because Alabama dominated the series. For the first three meetings, South Carolina wasn't even able to get points on the board. In the first 10 meetings, the Gamecocks were shut out five times, and it seemed like Alabama would always be the Gamecocks kryptonite.
It wasn't until 2001 that South Carolina finally was able to get over the hump that was Alabama. The best part was the game was in Columbia, and the home crowd got to experience the first win the Gamecocks had against the Crimson Tide as they took them down 37-36 in the closest competition of the series to this date.
Since their first win of the series in 2001, Alabama and South Carolina have split the last six games 3-3. The last time South Carolina beat Alabama was almost 15 years ago in 2010 when USC was ranked No. 20 and took down the No. 1 ranked Crimson Tide and ended their 19-game win streak in Columbia.
That win is one of South Carolina's biggest in program history and most certainly their biggest over Alabama to date. Two of South Carolina's more famous former players went off in that game, with wide receiver Alshon Jeffrey going for 127 receiving yards adn two touchdowns and running back Marcus Lattimore adding two touchdowns as well. Both went on to have fairly successful careers in the NFL.
Head coach Shane Beamer was a part of the coaching staff at South Carolina the last time the Gamecocks beat the Crimson Tide. Beamer was the recruiting coordinator in 2009 and 2010 and was the reason players like Jeffrey and Lattimore were apart of the team and able to help lead the Gamecocks to victory over Alabama.
This game, however, will not be in Columbia, so the Gamecocks will not have their rowdy fans on their side. This game will take place in Tuscaloosa, the first one since 2009 when South Carolina lost 20-6. the last time South Carolina left Tuscaloosa with a win, though, was back in 2004, 20 years ago, when the Gamecocks handed Alabama their first loss that season.
It has been five years since South Carolina and Alabama have faced off, and with both teams coming off a loss in Week 6, this game could serve as one of the more exciting games in the series history. Both teams are coming in angry from their losses last week and could make this a great matchup, one that could rival the game back in 2001.
