High school recruiting is a win some, lose some game. The South Carolina Gamecocks and head coach Shane Beamer are learning that the hard way during the 2026-27 recruiting cycle.Â
On Thursday, the Gamecocks lost out to a big-time target in Robert Geathers III, a 4-star safety prospect out of Charlotte, N.C. Although Geathers took an official visit to South Carolina on June 12, the Providence Day linebacker verbally committed to the Florida Gators:

Geathers is rated as the No. 19 overall prospect out of his home state, and is 56th overall safety for 2027 per the 247Sports Composite. The North Carolina prospect had received an offer from head coach Jon Sumrall and the Gators in April, and took an official visit to Gainesville on May 28. In recent weeks, he also took visits to Vanderbilt and Tennessee. He had another one scheduled for Georgia on June 19, but that is likely off the book now that he is committed to the Gators. Â
Geathers is considered both a safety and linebacker, as he plays primarily at the dime/nickel slot on defense. He actually has some pretty impressive NFL bloodlines as his father, Robert Geathers Jr. played in the league. His father played a whopping 11 seasons in the league, all with the Cincinnati Bengals, who drafted him in the fourth round of the 2004 NFL Draft. Across his career, he made 104 starts, and had 326 total tackles with 34 sacks. He was drafted out of Georgia, so the Bulldogs missed out here on landing their former player's son, as well. Â
Obviously losing out on the prospect hurts for South Carolina. But the Gamecocks did recently land a commitment from offensive lineman Will Clayton this week, and are hosting one of their biggest targets in five-star safety Joshua Dobson this weekend. The Gamecocks are also a finalist for linebacker Jackson Ross, who is from Columbia.Â
South Carolina's 2027 class is currently ranked 64th nationally per 247Sports.Â
