When South Carolina offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains took the head coaching position at Appalachian State last December, it didn't take too long for head coach Shane Beamer to fill the position. Beamer didn't even take much time looking outside the football facility as Mike Shula was sitting right in front of him.
Shula spent last season as an offensive analyst for the Gamecocks, working closely with the quarterbacks, most notably LaNorris Sellers. So, with Shula being promoted to the offensive coordinator, the transition should be pretty seamless. Shula brings. a lot of experience in the job working both in college and the NFL, most notably with a quarterback Sellers is often compared to Cam Newton.
Beamer joined SportsTalk Media Network on Wednesday night for their SportsTalk Show and spoke on what he felt hiring Shula would do for the offense, mainly quarterbacks like Sellers.
Sellers is not just a typical quarterback; he is a quarterback who can both throw the ball very well but also be lethal with his legs and running ability. Shula has worked with quarterbacks like Newton, Daniel Jones, and Josh Allen, quarterbacks in the NFL who are known for their running ability, as well as their arm strength.
So when Beamer was deciding on who his offensive coordinator would be, he kept Sellers in mind and wanted to bring someone in who could help shape a quarterback like Sellers, and Shula happened to meet all of these traits.
The two biggest differences for Sellers going into 2025 will be Shula at the offensive coordinator position and the fact that he has a whole season of experience and film to go back and look at. Sellers only threw the ball four times his true freshman season, but he became the starter in his redshirt freshman season, and there is a lot to look at and shift through.
Shula and Sellers Lucily already have a connection heading into the 2025 season, as they worked closely in 2024 when Shula was an offensive analyst. Sellers don't have to get to know his offensive coordinator all over again, the bond is already there, which is something important that Beamer took into consideration.
