It's a great day to be a South Carolina Gamecock fan, folks. On Wednesday evening, the Gamecocks' 2027 class added one of the nation's most highly-touted recruits this cycle, and landed a commit from five-star cornerback Joshua Dobson. He committed Wednesday evening during his ceremony which was live streamed on Rivals' YouTube page.

Dobson committed to South Carolina over his final schools in Texas A&M, Michigan and Auburn. Although the Aggies had been the favorite to land the coveted cornerback, who is rated as the nation's No. 3 overall cornerback for 2027 per the 247Sports Composite, South Carolina made a late push to pull off the recruiting stunner.

The odds of the Gamecocks landing Dobson had been trending heavily in Shane Beamer's favor as his decision came closer. In fact, just hours before his commitment ceremony Rivals recruiting experts in Steve Wiltfong and Chad Simmons logged a prediction for South Carolina to land the highly-talented cornerback in Dobson. On3 also flipped its prediction from TAMU, giving the Gamecocks a 76% chance to land Dobson on Wednesday.

Joshua Dobson's South Carolina commitment sends a loud message across the SEC

South Carolina has been making some huge headway on the recruiting trail in recent weeks, and landing Dobson sends a message that the Gamecocks aren't going anywhere just yet. Just last week, Coach Beamer landed commitments from four prospects, including blue-chips in receiver Iveon Lewis and cornerback Kelvin Millington. Earlier in the week, Wiltfong also reported Monday that the Gamecocks were in a great spot to land the cornerback, adding that South Carolina had given Dobson the "healthiest" offer of all his final schools, and that it could be too much to say no to.

He also added that although Dobson wanted more clarity on head coach Shane Beamer's future in Columbia. The sixth-year head coach is coming off a 4-8 season and likely needs to have a big rebound 2026 season for his tenure in Columbia to continue. But the school has cleared things up for Dobson in that department, as the recruitment was also led by South Carolina defensive backs coach Torrian Gray, per Wiltfong.

For most of the month of June, Rivals had the Aggies with an 86% chance of landing Dobson, with the same outlet putting South Carolina at 3%. Saturday Blitz's Nicholas Rome also predicted Dobson would land at Texas A&M. The Aggies had been recruiting him hard, and Dobson reportedly also had a great relationship with members of the Aggies' 2027 class, which is rated No. 1 overall in the country. But in the end, the Gamecocks pulled out all the stops to stick the landing.

Dobson is also the No. 1 overall prospect from his home state of North Carolina, which South Carolina is the closest to of his final schools. Although he will play high school football out of Hough High School in Cornelius, N.C. for his senior season, he started his career at Catawba Ridge in Fort Mill, S.C. Coach Beamer. South Carolina also had the benefit of having the last of Dobson's final visits to his final schools, as he was on-campus in Columbia the weekend of June 19.

Kudos to Coach Beamer on pulling off one of the biggest recruiting pulls of his South Carolina coaching career. Entering Wednesday, South Carolina's class ranked 57th nationally, but with Dobson's commitment, that ran is expected to skyrocket.

The cornerback is a versatile athlete who also runs track. Per MaxPreps, Dobson accounted for 76 total tackles with six interceptions and 17 passes defended across three seasons tracked by the outlet. He added four receptions for149 yards receiving with two touchdowns on offense, getting another 530 kick-return yards.

Here's 247Sports' Andrew Ivins on what makes Dobson so great, via his scouting report:

"Speedy zone corner with a wiry frame that can race into the deeper third. Not only has tested in the upper percentile, but has turned heads in a camp setting with his quick feet and smooth transitions. Gains depth with ease while in reverse. Keeps his eyes on the prize and will get to the catch point. Dangerous as a return man with his acceleration (3 career kickoff return touchdowns) and profiles as a potential ace gunner given how he runs. Projects as a multi-year starter at the Power Four level that can man the perimeter in a quarters-heavy scheme."

Dobson will likely rank among some of the highest-rated recruits in South Carolina history, assuming his commitment holds until December. Congrats to Beamer and Company on the move, and welcome home to Columbia, Dobson!
