The South Carolina Gamecocks are showing no signs of slowing down on the recruiting trail. On Wednesday morning, Gamecocks head coach Shane Beamer added the first member to his 2028 recruiting class.
South Carolina landed a verbal commitment from receiver Joseph "Jett" Gibbs. He made his commitment to the Gamecocks official on his X page:

Gibbs plays high school football out of Southeast Alamance High School in Haw River, North Carolina. Per the 247Sports Composite, he is rated as the No. 10 overall prospect out of his home state of North Carolina, and is rated as 2028's No. 45 overall receiver. Rivals classifies him as an athlete and ranks Gibbs even higher. They put him as the No. 12 overall athlete for 2028, and the No. 8 overall prospect out of North Carolina. He is being recruited to South Carolina primarily as a receiver.
According to Gamecock Central, Gibbs received an offer from South Carolina after impressing on-campus at a camp last month in Columbia. He chose South Carolina despite holding offers from the likes of Florida, Kentucky, NC State, North Carolina, Vanderbilt and Virginia Tech, among several others.
Per MaxPreps, Gibbs had six receptions for 159 yards and two touchdowns last season as a sophomore, averaging 26.5 yards per catch. He was also utilized some on kick and punt returns, as well. According to his 247Sports bio, Gibbs also runs track, qualifying for state in the 100-meter dash. Maybe that's how he got his "Jet" nickname.
Gibbs is the first commitment for South Carolina's 2028 class, which ranks 12th nationally per 247Sports. His commitment marks even more positive momentum on the recruiting trail in recent weeks, as South Carolina has been hot with its 2027 class.
In the last week, the Gamecocks have landed several blue-chip prospects, headlined by five-star cornerback Joshua Dobson. South Carolina also landed Dobson's high school teammate, four-star safety Davion Jones, as well as four-star offensive tackle Nate Carson, whom the Gamecocks beat out Clemson for.
Coming off of a 4-8 season in Columbia this past year, the positivity on the recruiting trail has to be encouraging for South Carolina fans. While Gibbs might be the first member to the Gamecocks' 2028 class, he won't be the last.
Congrats to Gibbs on the commitment, and welcome home to South Carolina!
