The South Carolina Gamecock baseball program might be several months from the 2027 season starting. But Gamecock fans have a chance to watch one of their own suit up on the diamond this summer for USA Baseball.

Gamecock incoming transfer JD Stein, who transferred from Wake Forest just last month, was named to USA Baseball's Collegiate National Team earlier this week. He is one of 28 players to make the final roster, as he joins the squad ahead of the first-ever World Collegiate Baseball Championship, which will be held July 11-15 at the Taichung City Intercontinental Baseball Stadium in Taichung City, Taiwan.

Stein made the roster following two weeks of training in North Carolina and Virginia. He is considered one of the heavy hitters that the Gamecocks landed during this transfer portal cycle.

Stein is a big-time prospect who just wrapped up his true freshman season at Wake Forest. He finished the season hitting an impressive .266 on the season, including 50 hits, 41 RBI and five home runs.

Coming out of high school in Carmel, Indiana, Stein was rated by Perfect Game as the No. 1 rated shortstop in his home state, and the No. 5 overall prospect per his Wake Forest bio. In Columbia, Stein will be reunited with his hitting coach with the Demon Deacons in Bill Cilento. New Gamecocks head coach Kevin Schnall hired the longtime Wake Forest assistant as one of his first assistants at South Carolina.

How to watch JD Stein and Team USA

Stein and the stars and stripes will open with pool play against Korea on July 11, with a July 12 game scheduled against Chinese Taipei. The United States will then play Japan on July 12. The semifinals are scheduled for July 14, with the finals set for July 15. Fair warning though, since the games are being played in Taiwan, they will start on the late evening and early morning hours for most viewers in the United States.

  • July 11: Team USA vs. Korea (12:30 a.m. ET)
  • July 12: Team USA vs. Chinese Taipei (6:30 a.m. ET)  a.m.
  • July 13: Team USA vs. Japan (12:20 a.m. ET) a.m.
  • Semifinals: July 14
  • Finals: July 15

Live streams are offered via USA Baseball.

Stein is the first South Carolina player to make USA Baseball's collegiate team since Tyler Johnson in 2016.

Congrats to Stein on making the team, and best of luck in Tawain!
