The South Carolina Gamecocks are getting red-hot on the recruiting trail, folks. Just over 24 hours after landing five-star cornerback Joshua Dobson, head coach Shane Beamer landed another verbal commitment from another blue-chipper.
On Thursday evening, four-star safety Davion Jones, who is rated as the No. 9 overall safety for 2027 per the 247Sports Composite, committed to South Carolina. The North Carolina prospect picked the Gamecocks over his final other schools in Auburn, Georgia, Indiana, LSU:

The safety out of Cornelius, N.C. is a high school teammate of Dobson, as the two will play together this fall at Hough. Both of them also visited South Carolina the weekend of June 19, so kudos to Beamer on landing both North Carolina targets.
Like Dobson, Jones took visits to his final schools in recent weeks, including visits to Indiana on May 15, Auburn on June 5, LSU on June 12 and the Gamecocks on the third weekend of June. He is rated as the No. 6 overall prospect out of home state of North Carolina, per the 247Sports Composite.
South Carolina has been gaining some major momentum in its 2027 class
The last few weeks of June and early July have been pretty great for South Carolina and head coach Shane Beamer' staff. Over the course of the last two weeks, the Gamecocks have landed four blue-chip recruits, including wide receiver Iveon Lewis, who flipped from Kentucky, cornerback Kelvin Millington, the five-star Dobson and now Jones.
With Jones' commitment, the Gamecocks' 2027 class now has five blue-chips, including four-star receiver Javien Robinson as well as the previous aforementioned four guys mentioned.
In a recent interview with Rivals' Chad Simmons, Smith said that the longstanding relationship he has with the Gamecocks coaching staff won out.
“They’ve been recruiting me since my eighth-grade year," Smith told Simmons. "The relationships were really big because I’ve known those guys the longest. There is that trust with the coaches at South Carolina. They have been with me for a long time.”
He added that how loyal the fan base at South Carolina was another reason why he picked the Gamecocks.
“At South Carolina, the fans are always there," Jones added. "The crowds are great and it is a great atmosphere.”
Per three seasons tracked by MaxPreps, Jones accounted for 120 total tackles, 11 interceptions and 19 passes defended.
