It has been four years since South Carolina faced Ole Miss, but it has been 15 years since Ole Miss made the trip to Williams-Brice Stadium and faced South Carolina in Columbia. The world and the state of South Carolina football looked pretty different than it does and a lot has happened since the last time these teams faced off in Columbia.

The last time Ole Miss visited Columbia, South Carolina, was in September of 2009, back when Steve Spurrier was still leading the team. The Gamecocks were welcoming the No. 4 Ole Miss Rebels into town for just the eighth time in program history in the fourth game of the 2009 season.

In 2009, the Gamecocks were known for their ferocious defense that shut teams down, and USC did just that, shutting down the Rebel offense and walking away with the 16-10 win.

The defense featured one of the Gamecocks' most famous defensive players, Eric Norwood, who broke the record for career sacks, getting his 27th in the opening drive of the game. South Carolina jumped out to a 16-3 lead and unfortunately wouldn't score again in the game, and Ole Miss tried to make their way back but was only able to score a touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Even with the top-five win over the Rebels, the Gamecocks finished just 7-6 that season with a loss in the PapaJohns.com Bowl to UConn.

This game was big in more ways than one that season, as it was the beginning of a beloved in-game tradition for Gamecock fans. The song "Sandstorm" was played during a timeout in the fourth quarter of the game when South Carolina needed a big stop. The broadcast didn't cut to commercial during this timeout, and the Gamecock crowd went absolutely nuts.

During that timeout, broadcaster Chris Fowler uttered the famous line, "A rave has broken out in Columbia," because the entire crowd was going crazy, jumping around, screaming, and dancing. This was the birth of a new tradition that continues today with the crowd.

The world itself looked very different the last time Ole Miss and South Carolina played in Williams-Brice Stadium. Barack Obama has just been sworn into office; there was a new fashion trend of bright-colored leggings, the fourth Harry Potter movie had just come out, the second Twilight movie was also released, and so much more.

Even though the 2009 season didn't end the way Gamecock fans would have liked it to, there were some good things that came out of it as well.
