The latest South Carolina Gamecocks news from the last week, starting with an update from the football team's recruiting efforts

The Gamecocks had an important weekend in recruiting, and the results were mixed.

4-star safety Kendall Daniels, Jr. announced his commitment to the South Carolina football program.

4-star offensive linemen Jaylen Gilchrist (Maryland Terrapins) and Juan Gaston (Georgia Bulldogs) picked other programs and so did 5-star EDGE Jared Smith (Auburn Tigers).

Earlier in the week, the Gamecocks lost a commitment in the class of 2025 as linebacker/EDGE Jaiden Braker decommitted and flipped to the LSU Tigers.

South Carolina football recruiting staffers Sam Serbay and Brandon Middleton were promoted to director of offensive recruiting and director of defensive recruiting, respectively.

The Gamecocks placed several players on preseason watch lists for major awards.

Running back Rocket Sanders (Maxwell Award), linebacker Debo Williams (Bronko Nagurski Trophy), defensive tackle Boogie Huntley (Wuerffel Trophy), punter Kai Kroeger (Ray Guy Award), and long snapper Hunter Rogers (Patrick Mannelly Award) have been nominated so far. More awards lists will be revealed this week.

South Carolina football alum Taylor Stallworth is back in the NFL.

On Sunday, Stallworth signed a new contract with the Washington Commanders.

The Gamecock basketball squad sent a player to a prestigious showcase for the first time.

Sophomore forward Collin Murray-Boyles is participating in the Nike Basketball Academy this week. He will work out and play in front of current and former NBA players, coaches, executives, and scouts.

Dawn Staley's South Carolina basketball team is making some behind-the-scenes recruiting noise.

4-star Jaida Civil, one of the top risers in the recruiting industry, put the Gamecocks on her top-11 list.

5-star Deniya Prawl also put the Gamecocks in her top list, making them one of 8 finalists in her recruitment.

The Gamecocks also pushed another handful of non-conference games onto the official schedule for 2024-2025.

Carolina will play East Carolina, South Florida, Charleston Southern, Wofford, and UConn in home contests this season. The USF contest is part of a home-and-home series.

Former South Carolina baseball star Christian Walker won a couple of awards.

Walker was the MLB Player of the Month at first base, and he was chosen as the Arizona Diamondbacks' representative for the Heart and Hustle Award.

Another former Gamecock is beginning his coaching career.

Former catcher Jonathan French (who also played for the rival Clemson Tigers and the Houston Cougars) will join Chris Lemonis' staff with the Mississippi State Bulldogs in an off-field role.

In the Summer Olympics in Paris, several South Carolina Gamecocks are performing well.

While a large number of USC athletes have competed, the top-2 participants so far have been former South Carolina basketball star A'ja Wilson and sprinter/hurdler Quincy Hall.

Wilson and Team USA are working their way through the tournament convincingly and are the overwhelming favorite to win the gold medal.

Hall is competing in the 400-meter sprint and won his preliminary heat as he qualified for the semifinals. He is a favorite to win a medal.
