The latest South Carolina Gamecocks news from the last week, starting off with an update on the football team

Shane Beamer's Gamecocks didn't make much news this week (and with less than two weeks to go now before the season opener, that's a good thing).

One of the biggest news items from the week surrounded USC's uniforms as the South Carolina football team unveiled some throwbacks that pay homage to George Rogers and the 1980 team.

Former Gamecocks Damiere Byrd (Buffalo Bills) and Stephon Gilmore (Minnesota Vikings) signed one-year contracts to extend their long NFL careers.

A handful of Gamecocks earned some preseason recognition.

Joining the others from Carolina on preseason award watch lists, defensive lineman Tonka Hemingway was placed on the list for the Bednarik Award, linebackers Debo Williams and Demetrius Knight made the preseason watch list for the Butkus Award, tight end Josh Simon was named a "sleeper" by ESPN, and Josiah Thompson made ESPN's preseason Freshman All-American squad.

Lamont Paris' South Carolina basketball team has finalized its 2024-2025 schedule.

The entire slate can be seen here.

Carolina is expected to put out the dates of their SEC schedule next week (the games and locations are already determined).

Former Gamecock forward BJ Mack is getting his first professional opportunity.

Mack signed a contract with Club Baloncesto Moron of the Primero FEB (Federacion Espanola de Baloncesto) in Spain, joining point guard Ta'Lon Cooper in Europe.

Dawn Staley's Gamecocks made the top list for an elite prospect in the class of 2026.

Oliviyah Edwards, a post player athletic and long enough to dunk the basketball, included South Carolina basketball on her top-10 list.

A class of 2026 prospect has committed to the South Carolina baseball program.

Easley High School right-handed pitcher Walker Cox pledged his services to the Gamecocks.

Paul Mainieri's team also has had several players decommit from the program as they fight to get their scholarship count below the allowable threshold.

Joining recent decommitments Peter Mershon and Henry Prindl, class of 2025 pledge Bruin Agbayani and '26 commitment States Farr both backed off of their decisions to join the South Carolina baseball program.

The Gamecocks have a lot of players still on scholarship, and with new roster limits coming into play after the 2025 season, there simply were too many names attached to the Carolina roster, meaning that decommitments were expected (and still could be expected in the future).
