South Carolina football unveils throwback uniforms honoring George Rogers, 1980 team

There are just two weeks left on the calendar until the Gamecocks take the field for the first time this fall, and Carolina football fans have been calling all offseason for something new in the uniform department. On Saturday, it was revealed that they were going to get it.

Well, more accurately, they are going to get something old.

In a Battle Armor video that hasn't been part of the program in several years, Justin King's media team revealed that the Gamecocks would be rocking some throwback uniforms later this season. In an homage to legendary running back George Rogers (who won the Heisman Trophy in 1980) and his teammates, Shane Beamer's team will wear a modern version of the uniforms worn during that 1980 campaign.

Complete with the trademark stars above a garnet facemask, the Gamecocks will wear the throwback unis (at minimum) at home against the Akron Zips on September 21st.

The Akron game will be the first night game of the season at Williams-Brice Stadium and is slated to kick off sometime between 6:00 and 8:00 PM (television information isn't finalized just yet). The season opener against Old Dominion is slated for a 4:15 start (it will be broadcast on the SEC Network and streamed on the ESPN app), and, after a road trip to take on the Kentucky Wildcats, the week 3 home contest against LSU will begin at noon (it will be on ABC and streamed on the ESPN app).

Speculation exists that this won't be the only throwback uniform that the Gamecocks put on during the 2024 season. The South Carolina football program experienced its first 10-win season in program history in 1984, and there has been a lot of talk this offseason about it being the 40-year anniversary of that revered Joe Morrison-led team.
