South Carolina Football: Gamecocks getting visit this weekend from nation's top athlete
By Kevin Miller
South Carolina football coach Shane Beamer has been active on the recruiting trail.
In addition to all of the work in the transfer portal the Gamecocks have been putting in, the USC coaching staff has been recruiting top high school talent, as well. Some big-name talents have already been on campus since the dead period ended, Beamer and offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains took a trip to Ohio to visit 4-star quarterback Ryan Montgomery, and even more elite talent is set to be on campus in the coming weeks.
One of these elite players who will be in Columbia soon is Jordan Young. The Monroe, North Carolina product is the #1 athlete in the country according to On3, and he announced on social media that he will be checking out the South Carolina football program this weekend.
After putting the Gamecocks in his top-13 back in December, Young will be on campus to hear the Carolina staff's recruiting pitch just a few weeks later. Being from the Charlotte area, the trip down I-77 to Columbia is not a long one for Young, so the Gamecocks likely will be able to set up some return visits from the talented high school junior.
As a player, Young plays all over the field for Monroe High. He plays more on defense than he does on offense.
As a defensive back, Young doesn't get targeted much in the passing game, but he is a fast and smooth mover, allowing him to run with any receiver he plays against and to come up as an effective helper in the running game. He has good body control and ball skills when the ball is in the air, as well, meaning he is adept at knocking passes away and pulling down interceptions in traffic.
On offense, when he gets the ball in his hands, he is a home run threat who can outrun a defense with top-end speed or knife his way through would-be tacklers with his quickness and vision.
