South Carolina football fans have been thinking about the quarterback position a lot lately.

After one of the best two-year runs at the quarterback spot in Gamecock history, Spencer Rattler (unsurprisingly) announced his intention to enter the 2024 NFL Draft shortly after Thanksgiving.

As a result, the LaNorris Sellers era is expected to begin next season. However, with just Sellers and incoming freshman Dante Reno on the roster at the position, South Carolina likely needs to bring in a transfer portal quarterback to fill out the room and provide some depth at the position (after all, it was just three years ago that the Gamecocks had to start four different players at quarterback).

That quarterback likely will be an older player because Sellers and Reno are both freshmen (Sellers is a redshirt freshman), and Carolina already has a 2026 quarterback committed in 4-star Alabama native Landon Duckworth.

According to a report from 247Sports' Steve Wiltfong, no matter what USC does in the portal at quarterback, Carolina could be close to landing their man in the 2025 cycle.

Class of 2025 quarterback Ryan Montgomery will be visiting the Gamecocks next weekend, and South Carolina football should be considered the favorite to land his services according to Wiltfong.

The Ohio native has plans to visit Georgia, Florida, and Auburn, and his previously announced top-5 included South Carolina, Florida, Georgia, Penn State, and Michigan (though his upcoming visit to Auburn likely means the top-5 is a bit obsolete).

As a player, Montgomery is known for his accuracy, but he can sling the rock, too. Montgomery broke Ben Roethlisberger's state of Ohio single-game passing record during his junior season, and he is a good enough athlete to buy time for his receivers to get open downfield.

You can watch some of his film here.
