South Carolina Football: 5-star transfer quarterback announces college decision
By Kevin Miller
Leading up to National Signing Day in December, the South Carolina football program had just one quarterback left on the roster. Rising redshirt freshman LaNorris Sellers was joined that day by Dante Reno who made his commitment official by signing his letter of intent to play for the Gamecocks.
Since then, there has not been an addition to USC's quarterback room despite the team's massive need for one.
Former Vanderbilt Commodore AJ Swann committed to the Gamecocks behind the scenes but flipped to LSU. Several other targets have come up, but nothing more than a couple of visits have happened.
One name that surfaced was former 5-star Malachi Nelson.
Nelson, the top-ranked player in the class of 2023 according to ESPN, was a consensus 5-star prospect who signed with the "other USC" prior to the 2023 season and spent one year in Los Angeles backing up Caleb Williams.
Gamecock fans started dreaming of adding Nelson to Sellers and Reno at USC, but he never made it to campus for a visit.
Over the weekend, Nelson made his commitment, and it wasn't to South Carolina football. Instead, the former 5-star will play next fall for the Boise State Broncos.
With Nelson and several other quarterback targets looking for a clearer path to starting (LaNorris Sellers is that good), the Gamecocks are still on the lookout for a player who can help out with the team's depth at the position.
In 2021, Shane Beamer's first year at the helm of the program, the Gamecocks started four different players at quarterback due to injuries, so Carolina fans are well aware that a team needs more than just two players in the QB room. However, who might join Sellers and Reno with offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Dowell Loggains remains a mystery.
