South Carolina football coach Shane Beamer did not reel in Vanderbilt starter AJ Swann, but his Gamecocks are getting looked at by a 5-star from the 2023 class.

South Carolina football fans are grateful for Spencer Rattler.

The former Oklahoma Sooner quarterback transferred to the Gamecocks before the 2022 season and, despite a disaster of an offensive coordinator, stuck it out for another season in garnet and black. His 2023 campaign was tremendous even as much of the talent around him wasn't up to par. Now, #7 is off to the NFL.

An interesting report surfaced on Tuesday that the Gamecocks could be in line to bring in a player who was in a similar situation as Rattler was in when he left Oklahoma.

According to On3's Pete Nakos, Southern Cal quarterback transfer Malachi Nelson has real interest in transferring to the South Carolina football program.

Nelson was committed to Oklahoma and head coach Lincoln Riley while Rattler and Caleb Williams were on campus in Norman. When Rattler headed to South Carolina and Riley and Williams headed to the "other USC," Nelson shifted his commitment to the Trojans.

After just a year in Los Angeles, Malachi Nelson is transferring, and Nakos reports that South Carolina, Tulane, Houston, Cal, and TCU are the early teams in contention for the talented rising redshirt freshman.

In the class of 2023, Nelson was the top-ranked player in the country according to ESPN, and he was a consensus top-5 quarterback and top-30 overall player according to the other major recruiting outlets. He is a dual-threat quarterback, but he is not a big-time runner (another similarity to Spencer Rattler).

Nelson officially entered the transfer portal on Sunday, and he immediately became one of the most coveted players in the portal. Though South Carolina, Tulane, Houston, Cal, and TCU have all come calling, there will be more teams that get involved before this transfer portal recruitment is over.
