Future Hall of Fame receiver compares South Carolina football star to DK Metcalf, "but slightly better"
By Kevin Miller
South Carolina football wide receiver Xavier Legette is the type of physical freak that causes people around the game of football to try to find comparisons as they make their NFL Draft big boards.
"Player comps" for big-bodied receivers who also could be the fastest player on an NFL field don't come easy, but Legette has had several big-time names paired with his. AJ Brown, Deebo Samuel, Josh Gordon, and Demaryius Thomas have been some of the former or current stars to whom pundits have compared Legette.
But the name that has come up the most is DK Metcalf. Though not as tall as the Seahawks star (he has been measured between 6'1 and 6'3" instead of Metcalf's 6'4"), Legette is a muscularly-built leaper who wins almost every ball in 50-50 situations, but he is also the type of player who will not be beaten in a straight-line sprint. Sounds a lot like DK Metcalf.
Future Hall of Fame receiver Steve Smith likes the comparison. In a conversation with Coley Mick on the top wide receivers in the 2024 NFL Draft, Smith raved about the South Carolina football standout. "Want to know who he reminds me of?...DK Metcalf...slightly better." He also said Legette has "swole bones" and that his size and strength will translate well to the NFL.
Smith, like many others in the football world, believes that Xavier Legette could improve his draft stock at the NFL Combine this week. Because he is one of the fastest players in the draft and should measure in around 6'2" and 220 pounds, if he handles his drills well, it seems almost a guarantee that the Gamecock alum will rise up some draft boards.
