South Carolina basketball star freshman helps lead Team USA to AmeriCup finals
By Kevin Miller
South Carolina basketball incoming freshman Joyce Edwards was no stranger to winning awards at the high school level as she brought home multiple National Player of the Year honors, two state championships, and almost every Palmetto State-based girl's basketball award available over the past two seasons.
Now, she has inched ever closer to an international accolade.
For the past week, Edwards and Team USA's U18 squad have been in Colombia, South America for the AmeriCup, and they have made easy work of their opponents so far. Lopsided wins over Brazil, Puerto Rico, and Mexico saw America exit group play undefeated, and on Friday, they dispatched the Dominican Republic with similar ease.
On Friday, a matchup with Team Argentina stood between Team USA and a berth in the AmeriCup championship game, and Edwards and her teammates proved themselves to be up to the task once again.
After jumping out to a 31-14 lead, the United States gave up just 10 points in the 2nd period and 8 total points in the 2nd half as they rolled to another easy victory.

For the game, Edwards posted 17 points and 6 rebounds. It was the first time since the tournament opener against Brazil in which she did not lead Team USA in scoring, however, as Sienna Betts led the way with 20.
South Carolina basketball class of 2025 target Jazzy Davidson also had a good game, scoring 10 points and adding 5 assists, pulling down 5 rebounds, and having a ridiculous 7 steals.
With a spot in the championship game secured, Team USA will have a quick turnaround. In the title game on Sunday, they will meet up with Team Canada as America's neighbors to the north beat Brazil handily in their semifinal matchup.
Fans can watch the AmeriCup championship (free of charge) as it is streaming on the FIBA YouTube channel. The final is set to tip off at 9:10 PM ET.
