South Carolina Basketball: Gamecocks win Uniform of the Year
By Kevin Miller
Last week, Uniswag announced that South Carolina basketball was one of fifteen finalists for their Uniform of the Year award. The Gamecocks were joined by the Southern Cal Trojans, North Carolina Tar Heels, East Carolina Pirates, Florida Gators, Maryland Terrapins, Tennessee Volunteers, Iowa Hawkeyes, UCF Knights, Oregon Ducks, Ohio State Buckeyes, Pittsburgh Panthers, Texas Longhorns, UCLA Bruins, and UConn Huskies as finalists.
This week, though, the voting commenced for the Uniform of the Year honor, and Dawn Staley's South Carolina Gamecocks were the recipients of yet another trophy. While not nearly as fulfilling as their National Championship win over the Iowa Hawkeyes ten days ago, being voted as the top uniform in college basketball is pretty nice, too.
The Gamecocks' black road uniform was the one used for Carolina's picture in the voting thumbnail, and many fans think it is the team's best jersey. However, the classic white home uni and the other garnet road jersey are nice looks, as well. This year, a new alternate home uniform, "The Tribute to Cocky," was one of the most talked about alternate jerseys in the country.
The University of South Carolina is an Under Armour school, and the brand has done a good job of taking care of the women's basketball team. After the Gamecocks won their third national title, Under Armour sent the team a bunch of championship swag, including "Win some, lose none" shirts, letterman-style jackets with "38-0" patches, and new shoes.
With Dawn Staley as the biggest name in women's basketball coaching and sophomore guard MiLaysia Fulwiley the first college athlete to sign to the Curry Brand at Under Armour, the apparel company likely will continue putting out elite uniform combinations for the Gamecocks, so fans can expect to see them back in the discussion for the nation's top uniform again in the future.
