South Carolina Basketball: ESPN fixes USC mix-up, immediately drops commitment in recruiting rankings

South Carolina basketball fans were not happy with ESPN recently when the "worldwide leader" mixed up South Carolina and Southern Cal on Cam Scott's commitment. Now, ESPN has fixed the mistake but dropped Scott in their recruiting rankings.

South Carolina basketball fans were not happy with ESPN last week.

The "worldwide leader" mixed up the South Carolina Gamecocks and the Southern Cal Trojans when elite class of 2024 guard Cam Scott made his commitment to Lamont Paris' program. For several days, ESPN left the Southern Cal logo next to Scott's name on their recruiting homepage.

The good news is that they have fixed their mistake.

The bad news is that they still have upset the Gamecock Faithful.

ESPN updated their recruiting rankings for the class of 2024, and Scott now, correctly, is listed as a South Carolina basketball commitment instead of a pledge to the "other USC." However, the national outlet has moved Scott down five spots in their rankings to #37 and down one spot in their position rankings to #10 (ESPN has him listed as a small forward, not a shooting guard). The drop comes on the heels of Scott being moved down from #24 just a couple of months ago.

Despite Scott having a tremendous finish to his senior season, including leading his Lexington Wildcats to their first state championship in 24 years, ESPN moved him down in the rankings.

No matter where Scott is ranked, though, he is in line for a big role on next year's South Carolina basketball team. As a potential starter on the wing, Scott will be asked to handle a lot of the Gamecocks' scoring duties and could be a secondary facilitator, as well.

Along with Trent Noah (4-star freshman from Kentucky) and Arden Conyers (3-star redshirt freshman from Columbia), Scott is part of a young wave of talent at the 2/3 positions who will play alongside veterans Zach Davis and Myles Stute next season as the primary wings on the roster. Combo guard Jacobi Wright could also get some minutes at the 2, as well, but Cam Scott is likely the favorite to win the starting job for Lamont Paris' team.
